A106 Grade B Steel Pipe Description
ASTM A106 is suitable for seamless carbon steel pipe for high temperature environment. ASTM A106 pipe is manufactured according to grade A, B and C. A106-A is equivalent to the domestic 10# steel material, A106-B is equivalent to the domestic 20# material, is a relatively common use of a steel pipe material at home and abroad. A106 seamless steel pipe is mainly used in construction, mechanical processing, electrical, petrochemical and other industries.
Classification and Grades
ASTM A106 defines three grades:
-
Grade A: Minimum yield 30 000 psi; tensile 48 000–60 000 psi.
-
Grade B: Minimum yield 35 000 psi; tensile 60 000–75 000 psi.
-
Grade C: Higher carbon for improved strength; minimum yield 40 000 psi; tensile up to 85 000 psi.
We choose Grade B most often, due to its balanced strength and ductility. However, for extreme conditions, Grade C is sometimes specified—even though it can be less weldable.

Procurement Considerations
When sourcing A106 pipe, we recommend:
-
Verify Mill Test Reports (MTRs): Ensure chemical and mechanical properties.
-
Check Certification: ISO 9001, PED (for Europe), CRN (for Canada).
-
Inspect NDT Results: Ultrasonic or radiographic clearance.
-
Confirm Delivery Terms: FOB, CIF, or DDP, depending on your preference.
-
Assess Inventory: Stock vs. made-to-order to match project timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What distinguishes Grades A, B, and C?
Grades differ primarily by carbon content and tensile strength, with Grade C offering the highest strength. -
Can A106 pipes be welded?
Yes. Pre‐heat (150–260 °C) and post‐weld heat treatments are recommended to avoid stress cracking. -
Is cold bending acceptable?
Cold bending is possible but must adhere to minimum bend radii per ASME B31.1. -
How do we prevent scaling during service?
Apply corrosion-resistant coatings or use periodic descaling on high‑temperature lines. -
What is the typical lead time?
Stock items ship within 2–4 weeks; made‑to‑order within 6–8 weeks, depending on quantity.
